| | | Literacy Day | Tuesday, January 18, 2011 | Literacy Day activities were held on the 2nd and 3rd floors at SGS, on Friday, February 18th. The purpose of the activities was to encourage students’ interest in reading, foster their appreciation of books and to express themselves effectively in English.
The day started with colouring competitions for kindergarten and primary 1 students. Their work was judged on a class by class basis, with prizes awarded accordingly. While the colouring competition was happening, students from primary 2 and 3 classes designed posters promoting book reading for the Literacy Day Poster Competition. Following these activities, a book swap market was held on the 3rd floor. Here, students from kindergarten and primary classes swapped books from home that they had read and no longer wanted. This was popular with students and a great way to obtain new reading material at no cost.
A book donation box was placed on the 3rd floor during the book swap market. Here students could deposit books and magazines they and their family no longer required. A large number of items were collected. Thanks to the parents for their contributions. These books will be passed on to a needy school or charity in the near future.
Action next moved to the theatre for the story telling competition. Participating students from primary classes related a story in English for up to five minutes in front of all kindergarten and primary classes. Many students went to a lot of trouble to dress up in character for this event. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places overall. Well done to all students who took part in this competition.
Following a short lunch break primary 2 and 3 students read short stories to all kindergarten classes and primary 1 in the theatre. While the stories were being read, the audience watched a supporting slide show of related images. This was well received by the younger children, who eagerly answered questions at the end of each story. After each class had finished their time in the theatre, they returned to the classrooms where their teachers told them more stories.
The final event was a book review competition in the theatre. Students from primary 2 and primary 3 gave a review of a book they had read. The review covered such points as title, author, illustrator, setting, characters, plot and their opinion of the book. At the announcement of winners, place-getters in each category were awarded a trophy and an English book as prizes. All students who participated in the story telling and book review competitions each received a certificate.
