| | | Heroes Day | Friday, November 12, 2010 | On Friday 12th November 2010, Surabaya Grammar School held its Heroes day celebration. The activities were different compared to last year’s activities, especially for Kindergarten and Primary students. They wore different costumes and dressed as army personnel, police, doctors, nurses, soldiers and even freedom fighters. Teachers wanted the students choose to be a hero who helped other people.
For the first activity, teachers asked students to make and decorate a spear and explained to them that the spear is a traditional weapon from Indonesia. It was used when our heroes struggled for Indonesian independence. “This is a traditional weapon from Indonesia and usually made from bamboo” said Mrs. Feriana, the principal of Kindergarten and Primary. The next activity explained about the meaning of Heroes’ Day. Ms. Henny told a story about our heroes.
Our next activity was a trip to the Supermall Surabaya and was reported by journalists from Jawa Pos newspaper. At 09:30 a.m. Kindergarten students went to the Supermall. After they arrived they waited for the Primary students to join them. While waiting, they played a lot of games, lead by Mrs. Feriana. Thirty minutes after the Primary students arrived, all students were ready for the parade. Cafrizky (P-2), Mathew (P-3) and Tita (P-1) stood in front of their friends and carried the school banner.
The students and many teachers paraded through the Supermall for about thirty minutes, finishing at 11:15. Kindergarten went back to school to continue their own activities. The Primary students, continued their journey through the shopping areas collecting donations for the Merapi volcano victims. P-1 students took donations around Hypermart, P-2 students around Matahari, and P-3 students around the Supermall Food Court. They were very enthusiastic. “Excuse me, would you like to donate some money for the Merapi victims?” P-2 students asked, then they got it. After thirty minutes every class had collected money. They then counted the total amount they had raised. They received 650,000 rupiahs and RM 10 in donations. They returned to school very happy with their efforts and gave the money to Mr. Andreas.
