| | | Children's Day | Friday, July 23, 2010 | Children’s Day is celebrated every 23rd of July and it is one of the special days we celebrate in Indonesia. The main purpose of celebrating it, is to keep reminding us as adults to be concerned with children and their special world. Due to that reason, SGS decided to celebrate the Children’s Day on our own unique way. Finally we decided to make a fun day for upper class level (start from Kindergarten 1 to Primary 3 level) students at SGS.
We created five different activities for this event, which were Making Friendship Wreath, Time Capsule, Giving Old Toys and Clothes to Charity, Limbo Competition, and Water Balloon Catching Competition. For the Making Friendship Wreath activity, we asked all the students to paste their handprints on a piece of big paper wreath. The purpose of having this kind of activity is to ask students to work together with friends so that they would be more aware of the meaning of friendship. Furthermore, for the Time Capsule activity, we asked students to draw and write anything they want (for Kindergarten 1 and 2 level) or to draw about their dream job (for Primary level) on a piece of paper for each student. After they finished, we put it all in a big box and explained to the students that we are going to open the box on next year’s Children’s Day. The purpose of having this kind of activity is to ask the students to explore their own imagination. The third activity was Limbo Competition. During that activity, we asked students to play the famous Limbo game. After that, we continued the competition by asking students to play another fun game, Water Balloon Catching Competition. Even though some of students got totally soaked, they really had fun.
The last activity was Giving Old Toys and Clothes to Charity. During the activity, we asked some of students to hand the donation to Mrs. Fery as the Principal of Kindergarten and Primary level. The main purpose of this activity was to get students to be grateful of all they got now because there are billions of children out there who are not as fortunate as they are. The donation from students were given to two different places. The first place was TK PKK Lidah Kulon, which is located on Lodah Kulon, Lakarsantri. We chose that place because it was very inspiring. Although they do not have any big school building with a lot of facilities, they still keep their spirits high. They always try to be better by joining a lot of competitions. By giving the toy donation to them, we hope that our students can learn how to be spiritual like them. The Principal of TK PKK Lidah Kulon was very touched by us. She hoped that she can learn more from our humility.
The second place we gave our donation to was Pondok Hayat Orphanage House. There we gave our clothes for donation. We chose that place because Pondok Hayat Orphanage House is a very big orphanage house with a lot of children in it. Although they have so many members, they treat the members well and nicely. They put the orphan children in different rooms according to their age. In each room, there were at least two guardians to take care of them. The most amazing thing from them is, they teach the members to be devout people. Every time and every where they always remind the members to keep praying and live in harmony. When we gave them the clothes for donation, the chidren there were very excited. We hope our students can be inspired by them.
Overall, we would like to thank all students, parents, teachers, and school staff who helped the committee a lot so that the celebration could go smoothly. We hope we can learn new life lessons from his special day, which are: “Be grateful of everything you have right now” and “Keep your spirit high, no matter how difficult your life will be”.
See you on the next Children’s Day!
